Alumni Association – A Profile
Prafulla
Chandra College Alumni Association was founded in September 2002
and registered under the W.B. Societies Registration Act, 1960 with
Regn No. S/O:/12002 of 2002-03 on 7th October 2002. This was the
first step towards the future activities of this organization.
The aim is to promote fellowship and to establish, renew and maintain
contact among the old students, old teachers and non-teaching staff
of Prafulla Chandra College, to arrange and organize lectures, debates,
discussions, seminars, to print and publish souvenirs, brochures,
bulletins, to promote and encourage literary and cultural activities
and social services, to provide for financial and medical relief
for the poor and needy students, scholars and ex-pupils to undertake
welfare projects, to raise funds and to collect donations and subscriptions
for the purpose of the society and to do all other acts, deeds,
matters and things as may be deemed incidental or conductive to
the foregoing objects. Regular meetings are held with prior notice
at the college premises.
Activities:
Activities of the Association are executed under the leadership
of several sub-committees dealing with specific activities like
- Seminar sub committee, social welfare sub committee, cultural
sub committee, newsletter sub committee, publicity sub-committee
etc. Under the detailed guidance of the Governing Body the apex
body, which met several times during the year to ensure best result
of its effort.
A)
Social Activities: The social welfare committee of the
Alumni Association successfully organized a medical camp on, 10th
February 2003 in collaboration with St. John's Ambulance (Prafulla
Chandra College ambulance division).This health programme was attended
by about 125 participants, which included student members of the
teaching and non-teaching staff, members of the Alumni Association
and the members of the Governing Body of the college. The attending
doctors included Dr. Kanchan Kumar Chattopadhyay (Eye Surgeon) Dr.
Subir Sengupta (General Physician) Dr. Ujjwal Sengupta (General
Physician) and Dr. Sankar Prasad Som (General Physician). All the
attending doctors were felicitated with a plaque by Prafulla Chandra
College Alumni Association regarding their valuable services at
the camp.
b)
Seminars: On 28th July 2003 the seminar Sub-committee of
the Alumni Association organized a valuable Seminar on "Environmental
Awareness in educational institutions" in collaboration with
Prafulla Chandra College featuring eminent academics and resource
persons presenting papers on various issues and aspects of our environment.
The
programme commenced with a Tagore song presented by the Alumni followed
by a welcome address delivered by P.R. Dasgupta, the Chairman of
the Governing Body, Prafulla Chandra College and the President of
the Association as well. The goodwill messages sent by His Excellency
the Governor of West Bengal, the Vice-Chancellor Calcutta University,
the Minister of Higher Education, Govt. of West Bengal were read
out by Dr. Keka Dutta Roy, the convenor of the programme. Prof.
Samir Chakrabory, the Principal of the college was the next speaker
to address the gathering. "The entire programme had an audience
of the about 200 members and was well covered by press and media.
The
Keynote address was delivered by Shri Manabendra Mukherjee Hon'ble
Minister-in-charge, Information Technology and Environment Dept.
Govt. of West Bengal Prof. Suranjan Das, Pro V. C. (Academic) Calcutta
University delivered the Chief Guest's address. Mr. B.R. Naidu,
Senior Environment Engineer and in-charge, Central Pollution Board
was the special guest at the session and spoke on environmental
Education. Dr. Sudip Bandyapadhyay Co-ordinator, Dept. of Environmental
Science Calcutta University, chaired the Technical session. The
speaker were Dr. Pranabesh Samyal (Additional Principal Chief Conservator
of Forest, Govt. of West Bengal) who spoke on "Status of wild
life" Mr. Sandhi Mukherjee, IPS (Spl. Additional Commissionor
of Police (Traffic) spoke on "A study on environmental pollution".
Prof. Prithwish Kumar Roy Head, Dept. of Geography, Prafulla Chandra
College was the commentator for this session. The programme ended
with a vote of thanks by the Secretary of the Alumni Association.
c)
Book Exhibition: A book exhibition was arranged in the
college premises to commemorate the event where eminent publishers
of Calcutta partipated to display books on the Environmental issue.
A souvenir was also published on this occasion where eminent academics
contributed valuable articles.
d)
Essay Competition: An essay competition was arranged for
the students of under graduate colleges and Universities in Kolkata
by the Alumni Association on "Environmental Awareness in Education
Institutions in collaboration with Prafulla Chandra College where
52 students from different colleges participated. Prizes and certificates
were presented by the association to the Prize winners from New
Alipore College, Lady Brabourne College and Calcutta Girls College,
Sri Manabendra Mukherjee Hon'ble Minister gave away the prizes at
the on set of the Seminar. All the participants were presented with
a certificate of participation as a taken of encouragement.
e)
Students Workshop: There was a student's workshop on "Environmental
Awareness in Educational Institutions" where about 75 participants
and students were present on 12.09.2003. The prize winners of the
essay competition presented their papers. It was presided over by
Prof. Dr. Chittabrata Palit of Jadavpur University, Dr. Subhasish
Biswas of Jadavpur University and Smt. Damayanti Chowdhury Dept.
of Bengali; Prafulla Chandra College spoke on this occasion.
f)Reunion:
On 8 April 2004, Prafulla Chandra College Alumni Association successfully
organized a reunion of former students and teachers at the college
premises.The programme began in the morning with the lighting of
the lamp by Prof. Debi Prasad Mullick, one of the senior most Alumni
of our college followed by the rendering of the touching Tagore
song "Purano Sei Diner Katha" by members of the Alumni
Association. This was followed by a session of reminiscences and
recollections down the memory lane by the former students and teachers
of our college. Many of our former students sang and recited poems
on this occasion. There was a sumptuous lunch for those who had
gathered on this occasion. In the afternoon, there was an enjoyable
quiz programme between the present and the past students, and the
participants were presented with gifts. Though the first reunion
of the Alumni Association was a maiden attempt to reunite the past
with the present it was well featured by a TV coverage for the college
to enjoy.
g)
Cultural Programme: On 12th January 2005, Prafulla Chandra
College Alumni Association organized a cultural programme in collaboration
with Prafulla Chandra College to commemorate the closing ceremony
of the golden jubilee of City College (South) group of colleges,
which included Prafulla Chandra College. The programme highlighted
an enlightening talk by Dr. Amalendu De, former Guru Nanak Professor
of History, Jadavpur University and former President, Asiatic Society
to mark the centenary celebrations of the Swadeshi Movement (1905-1911)
there followed an enjoyable musical soiree of performances patriotic
songs and poetry "Sandhikhan or the juncture" by of the
members of the Alumni Association and Prafulla Chandra College.
A brochure was published on this occasion. It was a sponsored programme
well attended by staff & students of the college and members
of the Alumni Association. It was well featured by press and TV.
On 13 March 2005, Prafulla Chandra College Alumni Association was
invited by the Corpus Research Institute Kolkata to present a programme
of patriotic songs and poetry at the Princes Hall, Victoria Memorial,
Kolkata to illustrate "Bengal in the Swadeshis Era". This
programme was jointly sponsored by Victoria Memorial and Corpus
Research Institute. It was a lively presentation and well appreciated
by the audience and the media.
h)
Newsletter: The Alumni Association publishes a newsletter
highlighting its activites every year with a view to project its
aims and objectives before the alumni of the college and to welcome
addition of members to the Alumni Association as well.
i)
Finance: On the finance and funding of the activities of
the association, the members patrons, like the authorities of the
Prafulla Chandra College played a very important role to cover all
the commitments and work shouldered by our association. It is a
vulnerable area where there is scope for improvement by personal
contacts with many more old pupils of the college as well as sponsorers.
At present collections by way of advertisements, membership fees
as well as donation from Prafulla Chandra College play a vital role
in implementing each of the activities.
The alumni Association have successfully completed its third financial
year and its financial position has been audited with credit by
B.N. Chakraborry & Co. Chartered Accountants.
The Alumni Association has 100 active members including life members
and annual members with the help and cooperation of the members
benefactors and well wishers. The association hopes to organize
further programmes, a reunion and other social and cultural activities
in the coming years.
